Allow me to take a moment to again extol the virtues of Linux. My department has this rather ancient HP desktop (Pentium II, 256 MB RAM, yadda yadda) that someone had setup to run as a server using Server 2003. Now I actually like Server 2003, really I do...just not on a system that slow. I didn't even think it would actually *install* on something like that. The only thing this box had going for it was a 200 GB hard drive. Really though what we needed was a simple file server. No group policies, no user authentication...just a dumb box to act as a NAS device. Enter Linux and Samba. Ubuntu Server runs like a dream on old hardware, the virtual NIC assignments actually *work* and everyone is a shiny happy camper. Seriously, I really love this OS. Added bonus? No one can muck around with the OS the way they could on the last system. Outside the file share directory, everything is locked up tight. Cron is scripted to handle the updates for me. I don't even need a monitor for the box since it has SSH access. I'm such a dork. Tags: geek, linux Current Mood: pleased
